Tata IPL 2024 Match 03 , KKR vs SRH – Match Report

KKR vs SRH

In a thrilling match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Kolkata Knight Riders secured a narrow victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad thanks to a brilliant final over by Harshit Rana, who defended 13 runs. Andre Russell’s outstanding all-round performance, scoring 64 runs off 25 balls and taking 2 wickets for 25 runs, was instrumental in KKR’s success in Match 3 of the Tata IPL 2024.

Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive innings of 63 runs off 29 balls almost turned the game in favor of his team but Harshit Rana’s exceptional final over ensured Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory by four runs in a thrilling match.

Before that, Andre Russell showcased his six-hitting prowess by scoring 64 runs off 25 balls. His partnership with Ramandeep Singh, who contributed 35 runs off 17 balls, enabled Kolkata Knight Riders to recover from a precarious position of 119/6 and set a challenging total of 208/7.

In pursuit of 209 runs, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s openers, Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma, who came in for T Natarajan, made an impressive start by scoring 60 runs in the Powerplay. They hit six boundaries and three sixes in the initial five overs. However, Harshit Rana broke through in the final over of the Powerplay, dismissing Mayank Agarwal for 32 runs off 21 balls with a short delivery that was caught at deep square leg.

Following a calm over by Sunil Narine, Andre Russell entered the bowling attack and made an immediate impact in his first over by dismissing Sharma for 32 runs off 19 balls with a well-directed bouncer. Kolkata Knight Riders then brought in Suyash Sharma as the Impact Player, replacing Ramandeep Singh.

Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi combined forces to add 36 runs to the total. Tripathi had a stroke of luck twice, escaping a dismissal when Varun Chakaravarthy dropped a catch and then surviving an LBW appeal that was not reviewed by KKR despite replays indicating all three reds. As the partnership grew, Shreyas Iyer reintroduced Chakaravarthy, who promptly dismissed Markram. Tripathi’s fortune eventually turned as he was caught at deep square leg off Narine’s delivery. Despite Heinrich Klaasen hitting a couple of sixes off Chakaravarthy, the required run rate continued to climb. The pressure intensified with 94 runs needed off 36 balls, but Mitchell Starc’s exceptional over, yielding just five runs, tightened the grip on the match.

Requiring 76 runs from 24 balls, Abdul Samad hit a six and a four off Andre Russell, but the KKR all-rounder quickly recovered to dismiss Samad in the same over. As the target reduced to 60 runs from 18 balls, Heinrich Klaasen and Shahbaz Ahmed struck three sixes off Varun Chakaravarthy’s over, keeping Sunrisers Hyderabad in contention. Klaasen then reached his fifty with three consecutive sixes off Mitchell Starc, while Shahbaz ended the over with another six, scoring 26 runs in total and bringing the required runs down to 13 in the final over.

Harshit Rana took charge of the final over, and Heinrich Klaasen smashed the first delivery for a massive six. A single was taken on the next ball, but Shahbaz’s innings ended as he was caught at long-on. Marco Jansen could only manage a single off his first ball. However, the game’s momentum shifted once more as Rana brilliantly caught Klaasen (63 runs off 29 balls) with a slower delivery, superbly caught by Suyash Sharma at short third man.

Requiring five runs from the final ball, Harshit Rana executed a clever slower delivery outside the off-stump. Captain Pat Cummins attempted a swing but missed the ball, igniting jubilant celebrations within the KKR team.

Before the match began, Pat Cummins, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, won the toss and chose to field first.

Sunrisers Hyderabad made a strong comeback during the Powerplay phase following Kolkata Knight Riders’ quick start. They managed to take the wickets of Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer, and Shreyas Iyer within the first six overs. Phil Salt showcased an aggressive batting display in the second over by hitting three consecutive sixes off Marco Jansen, although Narine’s run-out occurred due to a minor miscommunication during the eventful over. T Natarajan made an impressive start by dismissing Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer in the fourth over.

Salt and Nitish Rana attempted to steady the innings, but Mayank Markande made an impact in his first over by dismissing Rana in the 8th over. Ramandeep Singh, scoring 35 runs off 17 balls, then injected momentum with aggressive strokes. However, his innings was cut short in the 13th over when Mayank Markande took a spectacular diving catch at cover off Pat Cummins, halting Singh’s aggressive batting.

Salt reached his fifty milestone with a boundary, but he couldn’t capitalize on it further as he was dismissed in the same over. Jansen made another excellent catch on the boundary off Markande’s bowling to send Salt back to the pavilion for his innings of 54 runs off 40 balls.

Andre Russell came to bat and initially played cautiously before launching into a barrage of sixes. Rinku Singh, scoring 23 runs off 15 balls, also contributed as they together added 81 runs in just 33 balls, propelling Kolkata Knight Riders to a total of 208/7. Russell’s innings was particularly impressive, smashing seven sixes and three fours to remain unbeaten on 64 runs off 25 balls.
