In a thrilling match marked by dramatic shifts in momentum, the Gujarat Titans (GT) clinched a narrow six-run victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) to kick off their Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. The match came down to the last over, with MI needing 19 runs for victory. Hardik Pandya launched the first delivery over cover for a towering six, followed by a boundary along the ground. However, Umesh Yadav maintained his composure and delivered a well-directed short ball, prompting Pandya to pull it straight to long-on. Piyush Chawla faced the fourth ball and sent it straight to deep mid-wicket, much to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, who anticipated a victory. Umesh Yadav then sealed the win for GT, completing a remarkable performance.
Throughout most of MI’s innings, they appeared to be on track for a victory. Their pursuit of a target of 169 began with a challenging start as Ishan Kishan nicked the fourth delivery to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Azmatullah Omarzai, making his debut, generated swing with the new ball, causing Kishan to poke at it. Naman Dhir, however, found his rhythm and aggressively attacked during Omarzai’s second over, hitting three boundaries before sending one over long-off for a six. Omarzai retaliated by dismissing Dhir leg-before with the final ball of the over.
Dewald Brevis was brought in as an Impact Player, replacing Luke Wood, and he partnered effectively with Rohit Sharma to dictate the pace of the run-chase. Together, they consistently applied pressure on the Gujarat Titans (GT) bowling attack throughout the innings. Their aggressive approach was clear, with Rohit Sharma taking on Umesh Yadav in the fourth over. Brevis, a talented batsman, showcased his skills with some impressive shots, including an upper-cut for six that marked Spencer Johnson’s introduction to the Tata IPL.
The partnership of 77 runs between MI’s batsmen put them in a strong position before R Sai Kishore dismissed Rohit Sharma leg-before for 43 runs. After that breakthrough, GT tightened their grip on the game, limiting MI to just one boundary in the following four overs. With five overs remaining, MI required 43 runs with seven wickets in hand. Dewald Brevis’s impressive innings of 46 runs came to an end when he hit a shot back to Mohit Sharma, who managed a remarkable reflex catch in his follow-through.
The Gujarat Titans’ bowling unit showcased their skills in the final overs of the match. Spencer Johnson played a pivotal role by bowling the crucial penultimate over. Although he conceded a six off the first ball, he maintained control for the rest of the over and took two important wickets. This set the stage for the dramatic conclusion of the game, with Umesh Yadav prominently figuring in the proceedings.
The match saw several notable firsts, with Shubman Gill making his captaincy debut for the Gujarat Titans in the Tata IPL and leading the team. On the other side, Pandya also captained the Mumbai Indians for the first time in the tournament. Additionally, five players made their debut in the Tata IPL during this match. GT introduced Azmatullah Omarzai and Spencer Johnson, while MI brought in Naman Dhir, Luke Wood, and Gerald Coetzee for their inaugural appearances in the tournament.
Before the match, Pandya won the toss and opted to field first. Initially, the home team made a strong start and seemed poised to achieve a formidable total. However, MI’s pace bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and debutant Gerald Coetzee (2/27) played a crucial role in limiting GT to 168 for six.
On his captaincy debut, Shubman Gill, who was the Most Valuable Player in the 2023 edition, began with confidence and played elegant shots, scoring 31 runs off 22 balls with three boundaries and a six. Wriddhiman Saha also started well before being dismissed by a classic Bumrah yorker that crashed into his bat and rattled the stumps.
Sai Sudharsan’s innings of 45 runs played a crucial role in holding the Gujarat Titans’ innings together, especially as they lost wickets consistently in the latter part of their innings. Azmatullah Omarzai also displayed promising form with his 17-run contribution, including a notable six down the ground.
Bumrah made a significant impact in the final overs by taking the wicket of David Miller with a cleverly disguised slower delivery at the start of the 17th over. This breakthrough was followed by Sai Sudharshan’s dismissal, who was caught out towards deep square leg two balls later, adding to GT’s setbacks. Towards the end, Rahul Tewatia’s aggressive batting (22 off 15 balls) contributed to GT reaching a total of 168 runs.
