IPL

A formidable display of batting prowess, spearheaded by Venkatesh Iyer (scoring 50 off 30 balls) and Sunil Narine (with 47 off 22 deliveries), enabled Kolkata Knight Riders to comfortably chase down a target of 183 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Match 10 of TATA IPL 2024. This victory marked Kolkata Knight Riders’ second consecutive win, achieved at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Narine and Phil Salt (scoring 30 off 20 balls) established a strong start, accumulating 86 runs in 6.3 overs for the opening partnership. This foundation was built upon by Venkatesh Iyer, who played aggressively to score 50 runs off 30 deliveries, ultimately leading Kolkata Knight Riders to a seven-wicket victory.

Previously, superb bowling performances by Andre Russell and Harshit Rana played a pivotal role in limiting RCB to a total of 182/6.

In pursuit of 183 runs, KKR began their innings with an explosive start, with Phil Salt showcasing his aggressive intent right from the first over by hitting 6, 4, 6 off Mohd. Siraj. Sunil Narine, his opening partner, also contributed significantly by striking five formidable sixes, propelling KKR to a score of 85/0 by the conclusion of the Powerplay. The team managed to hit four boundaries and seven sixes within the initial six overs, establishing a dominant tone early on.

In the seventh over, Faf du Plessis opted for spin bowling for the first time, which proved effective as Mayank Dager dismissed the dangerous Sunil Narine on 47 off 22 deliveries with a quicker delivery. Impact Player Vijaykumar Vyshak then took another important wicket by removing Phil Salt (scoring 30 off 20 balls) in the subsequent over. Vyshak had an opportunity to take two wickets in two overs, but Dayal dropped Shreyas Iyer on 9 in the 10th over, with KKR reaching 112/2 halfway through their innings.

Venkatesh Iyer then launched an offensive against Alzarri Joseph, hitting two sixes and two fours to score 20 runs in the 11th over. Iyer appeared confident and comfortable as he reached his fifty in just 29 deliveries.

Venkatesh and Shreyas combined for a partnership of 75 runs off 45 balls, reducing the required runs to 16 off 30 deliveries. Venkatesh, scoring 50 runs off 30 balls, was dismissed shortly after reaching his half-century. However, Shreyas, unbeaten on 39 runs from 24 balls, took charge and sealed the victory with a six as KKR achieved the target with 19 balls remaining.

In the initial stages, Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain won the toss and opted to field first. Royal Challengers Bengaluru made a brisk start but lost their captain, Faf du Plessis, during the process. KKR’s pacer Harshit Rana made an early breakthrough in the second over, bouncing back strongly to dismiss Faf du Plessis with a slower delivery after he had previously scooped a six over third man. Du Plessis had adeptly executed a scoop shot over third man but attempted a similar shot over fine leg on the next delivery. However, the change in pace deceived him, resulting in a mistimed shot to short fine leg. Following du Plessis’ dismissal, Virat Kohli and Cameron Green launched a counter-attack, hitting five boundaries and two sixes within the Powerplay, taking RCB’s score to 61/1.

Kohli and Green forged a partnership of 65 runs off 42 deliveries, showing signs of building a substantial stand. However, just as their partnership was gaining momentum, Andre Russell delivered a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Green (scoring 33 off 21 balls) after being hit for a six in the previous delivery. Following Green’s dismissal, the visiting team maintained a tight bowling spell for the next couple of overs, preventing any boundary from being scored.

Kohli and Maxwell regained momentum with aggressive strokes, especially Kohli, who reached his second consecutive fifty off 36 balls with a combination of a six and a single.

KKR had an opportunity to break the partnership in the 13th over, but Ramandeep Singh missed a catch at deep mid-wicket, giving Maxwell a reprieve when he was on 11. They also let Maxwell off the hook in the following over, as Narine dropped a catch off Rana’s bowling when Maxwell was on 23. However, Narine redeemed himself by dismissing Maxwell (scoring 28 off 19 balls) with the first delivery of the subsequent over. KKR continued to make inroads, with Russell taking another wicket by dismissing Rajat Patidar, resulting in RCB being at 148/4 by the end of the 17th over.

In the 18th over, KKR brought in Angkrish Raghuvanshi as their Impact Player, substituting Varun Chakaravarthy, who had bowled his full quota of four overs.

The visiting team continued to take wickets consistently, with Rana returning to dismiss Anuj Rawat and conceding only five runs in the 18th over. During the 15-18 over phase, RCB could only muster 29/3 in terms of runs scored.

Karthik (scoring 20 off 8 balls) and Kohli played crucial roles in the final overs, smashing four sixes to boost RCB’s total to 182/6 by the end of the 20th over. Kohli finished unbeaten on 83 off 59 deliveries, including four boundaries and an equal number of sixes.
