The Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their winning streak in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 by defeating the Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets in Match 14 at the Wankhede Stadium. RR’s bowlers played a key role in limiting MI to a score of 125 runs, which they successfully chased down with 27 balls remaining.
The Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) opening bowlers justified the decision of their captain, Sanju Samson, who chose to bowl after winning the toss. The pitch offered significant movement, which the RR opening bowlers utilized effectively, establishing a strong start for their team. Trent Boult made an impact in the opening over by getting Rohit Sharma caught behind and dismissing Naman Dhir leg-before-wicket.
MI introduced Dewald Brevis as an Impact Player following Naman Dhir’s dismissal. However, this strategic move didn’t yield any immediate benefits for MI, as Brevis was caught at short third-man off Boult’s delivery in the third over. Remarkably, the first three batters were all dismissed off the first balls they faced.
In the following over, Nandre Burger claimed a wicket when Ishan Kishan (scoring 16 off 14 balls) edged one to the wicketkeeper. With MI struggling at 20 for four in the fourth over, captain Hardik Pandya entered the field facing a significant challenge ahead of him.
The next phase witnessed a counteroffensive, with both Tilak Varma and Pandya aiming to make the most of the final two overs of the powerplay. Tilak hit a six over fine-leg off Boult. In the last over of the powerplay, delivered by Burger, Pandya scored three boundaries, occasionally stepping out and attacking the bowler aggressively.
MI maintained their aggressive batting approach beyond the powerplay, steadily accumulating runs. Varma and Pandya added 56 runs together before Pandya (scoring 34 off 21 balls) was caught while attempting to hit Yuzvendra Chahal over long-on. Chahal’s effective bowling spell dashed MI’s chances of achieving a high total.
During the middle overs, the leg-spinner maintained a tight grip on the game, taking three crucial wickets. R Ashwin provided valuable support, although he didn’t take any wickets, conceding just 27 runs in his four overs. RR’s fielders complemented their bowlers’ efforts, with Shimron Hetmyer’s catch at point off Avesh Khan’s delivery, resulting in the dismissal of Piyush Chawla, standing out as a highlight.
Tilak (scoring 32 off 29 balls) got out in the 14th over, shifting the pressure of scoring onto Tim David. Despite being a powerful middle-order batsman, David could only score 17 runs in the slog overs before getting dismissed by Burger. MI’s innings concluded at 125 for nine.
The MI bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, exploited the wicket’s movement well. Kwena Maphaka made an impact in the first over, dismissing Yashaswi Jaiswal while attempting to play over cover. Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson faced challenges due to the early movement in the innings. Despite this, given the manageable target and their strategic approach to scoring opportunities, they navigated through this phase successfully.
Samson executed several characteristic drives through the off-side but faced misfortune as he inside-edged one onto the stumps off Akash Madhwal, who was making his debut in the tournament. A few overs later, Madhwal claimed another wicket when Buttler pulled a delivery straight to fine-leg. This left RR at 48 for three after seven overs.
Ashwin and Riyan Parag formed a crucial partnership of 40 runs that shifted the momentum in favor of RR, putting them in a commanding position against MI. Madhwal intervened once more, breaking the partnership by dismissing Ashwin, who scored 16 runs before getting caught. Madhwal’s impressive performance in his first match of the season showcased his skills and determination.
Parag’s impressive form persisted, requiring him to adjust his strategy and start cautiously. As the target neared, he accelerated, reaching his fifty with two consecutive sixes off Gerald Coetzee. The match was sealed as Parag hit a boundary through fine-leg, securing victory for his team.
In a challenging batting day where many struggled, Parag’s innings steadied RR through tense moments. His unbeaten knock of 54 runs off 39 balls was the highest score among both teams. This outstanding performance earned him the Orange Cap by the end of the game.
