In their debut win of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) clinched a 29-run victory against Delhi Capitals at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. MI’s batters led the charge with a stellar performance, setting a challenging target of 234 runs. Despite Delhi Capitals’ batters putting up a strong fight, Jasprit Bumrah’s precise bowling sealed the win for MI.
MI’s batting performance can be split into two parts, both anchored by their captain’s consistent contributions. Initially, the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan provided a dynamic start with an impressive 80-run partnership in just 42 balls.
Rohit displayed his prowess from the outset, showcasing his skill with two sixes off Jhye Richardson’s deliveries through the leg-side. Later, when Lalit Yadav entered the attack early on, Rohit confidently utilized footwork to loft him for boundaries, drove full deliveries, and maintained an aggressive approach. Meanwhile, Kishan’s contribution at the other end was notable, scoring a quick 42 off 23 balls with some impressive strokeplay.
Axar Patel’s spell turned the tide for DC, showcasing his left-arm spin expertise with accurate lines and lengths that troubled Rohit in the seventh over, eventually dismissing him at 49. Suryakumar Yadav, in his tournament debut, attempted a lofted shot on only his second delivery, which ended in a catch at mid-on, leaving him with a score of zero.
Pandya entered the fray at No. 4 while Kishan continued his aggressive batting style. Together, they added 30 runs from 17 deliveries before Axar Patel’s brilliant catch sent Kishan back to the pavilion. Shortly after, Khaleel Ahmed struck early again, dismissing Tilak Varma, leaving MI at 121 for four by the 13th over.
Tim David entered the crease and built a solid partnership with Pandya. Amidst MI’s wicket losses, Pandya’s innings of 39 runs from 33 balls provided stability and set the stage for David to excel in the slog overs. Utilizing his aggressive style, David targeted the leg side, smashing two fours and four sixes. He accelerated to 45 runs off 21 balls, pushing MI’s total beyond 200 as they approached the final over.
This was Shepherd’s moment in the spotlight. Anrich Nortje, bowling the final over, conceded 32 runs to Shepherd, who displayed tremendous power-hitting skills. Shepherd’s all-round performance included four sixes and two fours, some of which were hit flat and one that sailed long over square-leg. His onslaught in that over propelled MI to a total of 234, ultimately proving to be the decisive factor in the match.
The target of 234 was a daunting task, yet DC’s batsmen showed resilience, keeping their chances alive for most of the innings. Despite an early dismissal of David Warner for just 10 runs, Prithvi Shaw’s impressive performance led to his first half-century of the 2024 season. He displayed excellent form right from the start, highlighted by his six over third-man off the second ball of the innings.
After Warner’s dismissal, DC’s scoring rate was subdued in the initial five overs but picked up momentum in the latter half of the first ten overs. Abishek Porel, batting at No. 3, contributed with boundaries that aided in accelerating the run-rate. When Piyush Chawla came on to bowl in the eighth over, Shaw struck a six over long-on and added two more fours to his tally. In the ninth over, he reached his fifty milestone with a well-executed pull shot for four off Gerald Coetzee.
In the 12th over with the score at 110 for one and Shaw playing well, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a perfect yorker that went under the bat and dismissed the dangerous batsman for 66. It was a delivery that epitomized the effectiveness of a yorker in cricket.
Following this, DC continuously lagged behind the required run rate, and the dismissals of Porel (41 off 31) and Rishabh Pant added to their challenges. Despite the setbacks, Tristan Stubbs showcased a determined performance. The aggressive right-handed batsman took on the MI bowlers aggressively, reaching his fifty in just 19 balls. He smashed seven sixes and three fours during his resilient innings, concluding with an unbeaten 71 off only 25 balls.
Despite Stubbs’ resilience, DC struggled to build momentum from the other end, allowing MI to control the game. Although Coetzee took the most wickets for MI with four scalps, Bumrah’s performance was particularly notable. With figures of two for 22 in four overs, especially in a high-scoring match where both teams crossed the 200-run mark, Bumrah’s spell was invaluable for MI and stood out as a game-changer.
